If you've ever felt maybe you'd rather finish and send that report sitting by the river on a warm afternoon than in your stuffy office, your wishes have come true. Ross is not only ahead of the curve in terms of the number of home-based businesses.
Ross-on-Wye is surprisingly well connected. Not only is it just over an hour to reach Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham by car but from Newport the train takes you swiftly into London Paddington in a little over 2 hours. National Express buses from London stop in the town too. Nearby Ledbury has a railway station that connects with Hereford and beyond.
Symonds Yat is a picturesque village split across both sides of the Wye in the lush Forest of Dean. One side of the village is in Herefordshire, while the other is in Gloucestershire. This is perhaps the most iconic part of the Ross area, a place of great beauty.

Award winning owner Sandra Snell has been providing unique flower arrangements since she opened the shop around 15 years ago. In that time she's won silver and silver-gilt at The Chelsea Flower Show, as well as best in show at Malvern. ‘Last year I was even in the garden festival in Singapore,' she says.
The New Inn is a 16th century coaching inn located four miles outside Ross at St Owen's Cross. A multi-award winning pub, 2008 saw it named pub of the year in the Flavours of Herefordshire competition as well as being voted Midlands Family Pub of the Year. It was also a finalist in the Publican magazine's Pub Food of the Year 2008 awards, and has been given the Cask Force award for its real ales.
About three miles outside Ross at Upton Bishop, the Moody Cow pub is another firm local favourite. A converted farmhouse - with the restaurant in a barn conversion - the pub sells home cooked food and a wide range of local ales from the Wye Valley Brewery.
Coppini Caffé is a bright, spacious split-level coffee shop with tables outside where customers can sip their cappuccino in the warm weather. Open seven days a week, the café sells panini, toasties, sandwiches, soup, baguettes, wraps and mixed platters. ‘The panini and the toasties are the most popular,' says manager Jean Cooke. ‘Something hot, along with the Coppini special, which is soup and a toastie. I think the panini are excellent.'

Situated about half a mile west of Ross, Wilton Court has been a hotel since the 1970s but present owners Roger and Helen Wynn took over in 2000. 'It's improved year on year,' says Helen. 'We have a lot of loyal customers. For wining and dining it's a combination of locals and guests - 90 per cent of our guests eat at the hotel as well. We've been Flavour of Herefordshire finalists for the last seven years.'
