Cornwall's Family Butcher
As is clear from the rest of this site, Ross has no shortage of places to buy locally sourced produce - and meat is certainly no exception. A firm favourite with locals is the family-run Cornwall's butchers, situated on Broad Street in the town centre.
Opened eight years ago by Andrew Cornwall and his wife, the shop now has a staff of eight. 'It was just me and my wife and a couple of part-timers when we started and we just built it up from there,' he says. 'It's very successful now. Everything we sell is local, from free range pork to Herefordshire beef.'
As well as loyal locals, trade is boosted by the influx of visitors to Ross and the surrounding countryside in the summer, and the shop also does a healthy trade supplying local pubs and restaurants - including the award winning Bridge at Wilton and the Red Lion- as well as local schools like the John Kyrle High School and Goodrich Primary School.
The shop also sells a wide range of game, pies and fish as well as operating a catering service for parties and weddings. 'We've started doing hog roasts - whole pig roasts that are all free range,' he says. So what's the most delicious thing on sale? 'I'd say the free range pork - and in that you'd have to include all the home cured bacon and home cured hams that we do.'
