Worthington Woodpower

Enter the Tardis....Entering Worthington Woodpower is a bit like stepping into another world. The Ross-based shop is packed with lights, clocks, candles, cushions, children's clothes, gifts and jewellery - and much else besides. 'I know, it's like the Tardis in here!' says Fiona Swithenbank, who bought the shop a year ago.

Fiona relocated to Ross-on-Wye 20 years ago from Hertfordshire in search of a better quality of life. She was already running a small shop in nearby Goodrich, in the Wye Valley, when she decided to take on Worthington Woodpower as a going concern. So how does she find trading in Ross? 'It's a lovely little place,' she says. 'There are lots of really good lifestyle shops and no big chains, which really makes a difference.'

As well as walk-in trade from a loyal local clientele, a good deal of custom from further afield is attracted by the shop's adverts in glossy national magazines, and there is also a growing web business attached. 'I try and get things that are produced in the UK if I can, but sometimes that can make things really expensive,' she says. 'But all the stock is ethically sourced as far as possible.'

Among the rest of the fascinating stock you'll find hand painted brooms, bedding, toiletries, bags, scarves, stationery, vintage telephones and traditional toys and games. 'It's an Aladdin's cave,' she says. 'We sell traditional, wooden toys - no plastic - as well as kitchenware and all sorts of baking equipment. I'm in my element here - the main problem I have is that I need to be very disciplined and make sure I don't take it all home with me.'

Twenty years after relocating here she's had enough time to reflect on her decision. So what would she say to other people who might be contemplating the same move? 'I'd say do it,' she says. 'There's a fantastic quality of life here - the countryside, the river, very good local schools. It's a lovely place to bring up kids.'
