Can you dig it?

An architectural dig in Ross has uncovered what is thought to be the remains of a medieval Bishop's palace, not long after finding a 1,900 year-old Roman site.

The remains of a Roman building, possibly a lookout tower, were discovered after work began last May to repair the Grade II listed perimeter wall of Prospect Garden on the edge of the town, itself is one of the earliest public gardens in the area. The remains were viewed by more than 1,000 people from a specially constructed viewing platform between June and October last year.

Archaeologists from Border Archaeology, working on behalf of Herefordshire Council, then came across an 800 year-old stone wall during further digging to see how far the Roman ruins extended. The large medieval wall is believed to be part of the palace, which was known to exist in the area although its exact location had never been found and no contemporary images of the palace exist.
